Argent Wolf Berserker Strategies

Strategy Writeup

The Argent Wolf Berserker has a fast move set but is relatively easy to evade. If you use a two handed weapon, it is advised to chip him and agro him slowly. As all previous boss, this one has 2 phases. The first phase is fairly simple, usually a set of two attacks. If you are in close range he will use a set of single target smash or an AOE swipe attacks. Sliding to the side will do the trick. If you are too far, he will summon a blood circle that will explode after a second around your feet. Roll to him and do a good hit and run.

During his 2nd phase, he will curl a bit and send a high damage AOE which is highly advised to be evaded. In this phase a new move set will be seen and becomes faster. In close range he will mostly use the swipe attack, mid range he will do an uppercut swing with a single swipe follow-up, and far range he will summon a blood circle.

Stunning Backstab Strategy

This strategy works even in level 1 runs, and will combine a series of interactions to destroy the boss with backstab Drain Attacks. The mainstay Gift will be Numbing Mark (obtainable from the Assassin blood code) and Stun TrapHephaestus transformation on your weapon of choice should be used for applying Stun faster.

Defensive options can include Foulblood Barrier and Iron Will, while offensive options can include Overdrive, Adrenaline and Merciless Reaper (more on Merciless Reaper below). Optional utility options can be Blood Sacrifice and Concentration, provided you can use them wisely.

Passive Gifts can be up to choice, but one that will stay regardless of build is Sharpened Fangs, as our main source of damage will be backstabs.

Mobility should be Normal at least, as it can timely dodge the boss' attacks and fill our Focus gauge. You will want to use a Blood Veil that provides high Drain Attack damage, so Night Claw or GXH Assault depending on your stats can work nicely and still allow for low weight.

Great part of the fight will revolve around the use of Merciless Reaper and Overdrive to boost your backstab damage significantly. Merciless Reaper is consumed when you hit the boss with any normal weapon attack, however its benefits still apply to all sources of damage (including drain attacks) and doesn't get consumed if using Drain attacks. The strategy will be simple: Cast Merciless Reaper, and try to nail a backstab with it active. If it doesn't work, still aim for backstabs whenever you can, otherwise attack and inflict Stun.

Only parry if you're at range but the attacks can still reach you, and are confident you can parry the boss in a consistent manner. Otherwise, stick to dodging and aim for backstabs, as they're safer.

Phase 1

Make liberal use of Numbing Mark and Stun Trap along normal attacks to buildup the Stun gauge. Always dodge his attacks regardless of his position to avoid getting angled. His attacks are quite telegraphed and are a nice warm up for phase 2. Punish when he finishes attacking.

When the boss gets Stunned, cast Merciless Reaper, get behind him, and tap the light attack button on the middle of his back (where the tip of his tail ends). If you need to buff, the recovery animation just after a backstab is perfect for this. Repeat until he buffs himself in phase 2.

Phase Transition

His phase transition is quite fast and doesn't leave much room to do anything significant. If you're near the boss, and his stun meter is near full, cast Merciless Reaper and aim for a backstab. Once you manage to get one off (with or without Merciless Reaper), immediately use Stun Trap, which will buildup its Stun gauge significantly, and more than likely will bring it to full. Wait for him to get up, and once the Stun animation plays out, go for a backstab again.

Phase 2

In this phase you will be using consecutive rolls a lot since its attacks are much faster, so always save up some stamina for at least 2 rolls. Try to aim getting behind the boss after he finishes his attacks. Merciless Reaper will come in more handy here since he buffs his defenses, providing a greater armor-ignoring effect.

Never attempt to avoid its attacks with only positioning, it's extremely easy for him to change angle or position and hit you in a back swing. Alwasy roll the attacks, wait for the opportunity window, and backstab. Don't try to buff or heal on neutral, only when he's recovering from an animation.

Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Blood Geyser unparry icon 40pxIt will kneel and raise its hand and slam it down to cast a big AoE attack below your feet, dealing massive damage and knocking you down. Telegraphed. Does not change between phases. Roll two times in any direction to avoid the attack. If you are far enough you can dodge in his direction and use the opportunity to attack him.
You can alternatively sprint once you see him casting this attack and it will miss you.
Extensive Swing parryable icon 40pxThe boss will grab its weapon with one hand and perform a powerful two-hit combo from side to side that has very long reach, able to go behind its back, but has a considerable recovery.
In Phase 2, the initial swing and the time between swings are much faster, and the recovery time is also shorter.
Dodge away or to the opposite side of each swing (passive approach), or dodge into the boss twice (aggresive approach) to reach his back and aim for a backstab or a heavy attack. Do not try to avoid this attack with positioning, as it can and will hit you from behind.
In phase two, roll consecutively twice against the swings to avoid getting hit due the shortened delay.
Double Slam parryable icon 40pxAfter grabbing its weapon with two hands, it will raise it and perform a slam in front and follow it up with a one handed slam, with an increasing delay between each. It can slightly change directions between slams, but not too sharply. This attack is not done often in phase 2. Dodge to a side for the initial attack, and dodge backwards (ranged aggression) or into the boss (melee agression) to be in position to punish.
Uppercut Sweep parryable icon 40pxThe boss will grab its weapon with both hands, rear it back to his right side (your left), then perform a diagonal uppercut towards the player that is followed by a wide sweep from above.
In phase 2 the recovery time is much shorter, but the initial telegraph remains the same.
Dodge to the right for the first attack and then roll forward to place yourself behind him to avoid the second attack.
Slam into Swing parryable icon 40pxIt will grab the weapon with both hands, slamming it a short distance in front of him from left to right (your right to left), then follow it up with a wide sideways swing that covers its entire body. Has a very considerable recovery time.
In phase 2, both the initial attack and the follow up are quite fast, but the recovery time remains the same.
When dodging, do so when the weapon is moving into you for both attacks. The animation can bait you into dodging early, but the hitbox timing itself is rather tight, so it can be dodged in any direction you wish, as long as it provides you an opportunity to heal or punish.
Sweeping Backswing parryable icon 40px If the player is behind the boss, it will grab its weapon with one hand and swing it backwards in a 270° angle while turning its body. It can follow up with the same attack again, for a total of two swings. Each attack has considerable delay but has huge coverage and hits high, making it deceptive to avoid by positioning alone. The boss can end this attack early if the player gets out of range. The delay and wide hitbox can catch you off-guard, so pay attention to his weapon hand and dodge backwards for each swing, away from the boss.

Argent Wolf Berserker Lore

Argent Wolf Berserkers were once powerful members of the Military Enforcement Unit Cerberus; they succumbed to bloodthirst and turned into one of the Lost. They wield large polearms and are able to boost their speed and damage when enraged.

Lore theories should be clearly marked as such.

    • Added the Stunning Backstab Strategy to the writeup section. This strategy works consistently even on low level runs, though it requires a bit of skill to get the most out of it. Still, it's a decent alternative to just trying to smack it to death and hope for the best. Hopefully it can be of use.

I must be actual trash, because it took me about 30 tries to kill this boss, LOL, even implementing the tips on this page.
I started out trying to kill him around level 45, and ended up at 65 from the 300,000 souls I had gathered from going back to try and kill him over and over. They really needed to put a mistle closer to him. :')
I'm pretty sure the only reason I won in the end was because I was 20 levels overpowered, rofl. I also upgraded everything to +5 from all the Queen Steels I had.
Literally had no issue with any part of the game before this one boss, and I did fine in the area after this (great actually, since I'm overleveled as **** now lmao).
Dodging his attacks was just a huge *****, and it didn't help that one hit would wipe out 3/4 of my HP... but nah, I'm happy to admit I'm trash, at least now I'll have an easier time with the rest of the game. :D

I just came here to check again since I ****ing died. As soon as I finished the fight those teleporting bs enemies ganked me to death, and yes he only drops 4k haze. What a load of bullshit

The one in the cathedral? Fine. I don't mind. But the one in the DLC? Most BS boss I've ever seen one. Almost always one shots me on my highest HP build. Reusing a boss is one thing, but making it a fight where you can't make a single mistake is just bad design

walked in on this gut thinking he was just a stronger mob, was lvl 40 with plus 4 oni bane, and just murdered this dude

              • Anonymous

First try in NG, yet it took me over 10 tries in NG+. He oneshots me all the time even with nearly 3k hp. At least he can be easily backstabbed :/

I'm just trash I guess lmfao have tried everything I've been stuck here for like 3 damn days, first time playing a souls styled game

For me, a distance and speed attack with the bayonet doesn't work. However, heavy weapons with stagger are very effective. You can use the "hug tactic for this as well." With a low chance of backstabbing, I got used to positioning myself like I was about to stick my hand up its butt in order to get a backstab . Yeah sure, it's cringe but taking this advice from others in comments and reddits actually helped. I also waited for my partner to go and distract it first before I rolled behind and attacked. I couldn't wait too long or my partner would die. These tactics and heavy weapons secured my win, and I hope it helps those new or trying this boss again.

the annoying thing about this boss fight is not the fight itself but the path to it, I can take dying several times to get used to a boss' pattern but having to go through 4 of those teleporting chicks just to challenge it again is a massive pain

                      • Anonymous

One of the easiest boss. I thought it was hard initially, then I realize I could just wait and parry every single one of his attacks...

just one-shot this beast with 30k damage, who's the real berserker now?! can i one shot every normal boss in this game with my hyper mode build?! only one way to find out!
